How Green Was My Valley (1941)

Huw Morgan, the academically inclined youngest son in a proud family of Welsh coal miners, witnesses the tumultuous events of his young life during a period of rapid social change. At the dawn of the 20th-century, a miners' strike divides the Morgans: the sons demand improvements, and the father doesn't want to rock the boat.

While the film's themes are more relevant than ever and the acting superb, the reason why Ford beat upstart wunderkid Orson Welles is the same reason Robert Zemeckis' "Forrest Gump" would triumph over Quentin Tarantino's "Pulp Fiction" in 1994. Ford and Zemeckis were safe mainstream while Welles and Tarantino challenged the audiences. This remains an Essential Classic, but like "Pulp Fiction," it got robbed at the Oscars.

Although very romantisised, this film (based on the incredible book by Richard Llewellyn), is a cinematic delight. Filled with intense performances, strong characters and a loveable charm, How Green Was My Valley won five Oscars (and deservedly so)! A romantic film with no smut, violence or bad language, this movie is clean entertainment, and is guarenteed to break even the hardest of hearts.

Though I have yet to see Citizen Kane.... I would vote this movie Best Picture of 1941 still... for its unflinching realism...for its social commentary and view on class relations... for its warmth of characters... for its inspiring story... for the talented group of actors...and if I say anymore I will cry. Actually, I take that last part back, Donald Crisp deserved his Best Supporting Actor and Maureen O'Hara completely steals the show. And the criticism of religious society is very progressive for its time too.

Fantastic - recommended to me by my British Deputy on NATO staff. It is a beautifuly poignant and powerful window on the nation of Wales, the suffering of labor in the mines of that time, and the beauty that can be a community enduring all of that in all their simplicity and grace.
