Shalako (1968)

While guiding a hunting party of clueless European aristocrats, cowboy Bosky Fulton leads them into hostile Apache territory. Strangely enough, the long-awaited meeting between Connery and Miss Bardot is a flop. They look yearningly at each other a lot, and once he puts his arms around her and they fall out of camera range, but otherwise no sparks are struck.

Sentimental ode to our 16th president sports an unforgettable performance by Henry Fonda as the title hero. I dare you to imagine Lincoln as anyone else other then Fonda after watching this movie. The film adds allot of earthy dimension to Lincoln; just as likely to spit a log as he is to engage in more intellectual pursuits.

Its worth watching just for the cast; where else are you going to find Sean Connery playing a cowboy and Woody Strode an Indian warrior? The movie has great potential with its scenario of aristocrats trapped in the inhospitable West and director Dmytryk does mine it for some visual fun early on in the movie, but its all soon an afterthought. It must be said, Bardot looks incredible. Seriously, she does. It more then justifies this movie, that's how good. Poor Honor Blackman is cast in a role that is unsuited to her more natural tough instincts. Indeed its strange to see her getting slapped around by Indians; you wonder why she doesn't just drop kick them all. Its worth it for the Western aficionado, just skip the theme song.

"Shalako" is apparently based on a Louis Lamour western. Shalako (Sean Connery) is a hunter and tracker that bumps into a European hunting party in an area belonging to Apache soil. Amongst the hunting party are Countess Irina Lazaar (Brigitte Bardot), Baron Frederick Von Hallstatt (Peter Van Eyck), Lady Julia Daggett (Honor Blackman) and Sir Charles Daggett (Jack Hawkins). Soon enough the indians are on the hunting partys trail and Shalako will need to protect them from the present danger. This western hardly belongs to the best ones from the 60s. It lacks real suspense and it has too many of those classic theatrical and stiff structures in terms of acting and the general feeling. Sean Connery is ok as Shalako, but that is pretty much it I think.. No, I liked the title song "Shalako, Shalako....." as well!!

Overlong & underwrought British western really for fans of Sean Connery that I really had a rough time sticking w/. even as a fan. Those Apache were damn ruthless especially when they were pouring sand into that chicks mouth who was pretending to be dead it really paints Indians in a bad color. Brigitte Bardot isn't really worth much except to look good. Her romantic relationship w/ Connery reallly added nothing except making this movie a half of an hour too long. It's watchable though for oater fans who are looking for something a bit different but bangers & mash westerns are nothing special. Give me the spaghetti anyday
