(58%) A more glamorous example of film noir that ranks among the best, without necessarily being a true contender to the very best. The plot is decent, without it being exactly what most would call riveting, mainly because it's just too baggy by about half an hour. The two leads though in Robert Mitchum and Jane Russell are quite simply stars that you just don't get any more. Russell in particular looks otherworldly, and she is at least given something to do with a good portion of lines, plot relevance, and a couple of songs to sing. Which is nice. Vincent Price is a great addition in support, and the closing scenes are both action packed and quite funny. Well worth a look for fans of classics, but it may be too slack for the more modern film fan.

film is about 30 minutes too long, isn't really hard-boiled enough for a film noir (although it does have noir aspects in terms of lighting), and the lead actors play characters who aren't very well developed and are mostly uninteresting. So why the 4-star rating? Two words: Vincent Price. His performance in a supporting role is simply the funniest role I have ever seen in a film - anytime, anywhere. Has to be seen to be believed. If ever one actor saved a film from mediocrity, this performance is it.

I should like to yawn in its face, but I must commend to you Mr. Vincent Price who, as a ham film star on vacation, is, when translating his braggadocio screen roles into real life, intensely funny.

omg where do i even start with this movie. robert mitchum continues his domination of the male race, putting all other challengers to shame. he spends the entire last quarter of the movie shirtless for no other reason than to flaunt his virility. jane russell is all sass and champagne, and never caught without an evening gown. and oh god--vincent price, playing a shakespeare-quoting, rifle-toting BADASS. it's like howard hughes packed in enough for three movies in here--with extra sex and violence, of course. tonality, it's a little bit of a disaster, albeit an awesome one that never fails to entertain. definitely worth your time to check it out.
