In 1931, budding author Christopher Isherwood goes to Berlin at the invitation of his friend W. H. Auden for the gay sex that abounds in the city. He falls for street sweeper Heinz, paying medical bills for the boy's sickly mother, to the disapproval of her other son, Nazi Gerhardt.

Admittedly I really only wanted to see this because I love Matt Smith, but I was pretty impressed. It's a bit slow moving, but overall quite interesting, and the whole cast is compelling. With better production quality I would have enjoyed it more, but considering it's a BBC production it's definitely worth seeing.

Matt Smith is going to be ok once his Doctor Who years are over. Smith is a fearless actor who seems up for anything. His Isherwood is intelligent, articulate and wonderfully venerable. The surrounding cast are solid as well. Toby Jones is as always very good and Imogen Poots is also wonderful. Christopher and his Kind does a very good job of balancing the carefree attitude before the war and transitioning into the oppression and anger felt after the Nazi's take power. Christopher and his Kind is completely engrossing and utterly charming. It goes beyond sentiment and superficiality that could have been the case.

This exceptional autobiographical film depicts the Berlin period from 1929-1939 in the life of gay writer and creative, Christopher Isherwood, and is based on his memoir of the same title. The large gay culture in the Weimar Republic of pre-Nazi Berlin was largely well-accepted, yet gay men in particular became a prime target for Fascist misplaced anger at the long years of austerity and poverty produced by the signing of the Treaty of Versailles. As Hitler coalesced working class anger and middle class angst, he also exploited the cultures long seen as not truly German: Jews, gays, the Romany, and others, using them as punching bags and ultimately committing horrendous acts of genocide, resulting in the deaths of millions of Jews and an incalculable number of gay men. Isherwood's perspective is candid, descriptive, and engaging. Christopher's "Kind" is MY kind: I am a gay man. I am honored that this man, who left us in 1986, shared so much of his personal life with great detail. Thank you, Christopher: I call you brother.
