Lorna's Silence (2008)

Lorna is a young Albanian woman in a marriage of convenience with Claudy, a heroin addict. Just as Lorna is about to be granted Belgian citizenship, Claudy finds the strength to detox; this presents a problem not only for Lorna, but for the criminal who brokered the deal.

This is an excellent film by any and all means. It's a wonderful study of raw and real human emotion. The force of reality delivered by the two main characters, played by JÃ©rÃ©mie Renier and Arta Dobroshi, is undeniably powerful. The Silence of Lorna is a must see for anyone who enjoys a truthful drama. The directing and acting is far above par. Also almost, no music is used throughout the film which adds a powerful realness to its' tone. View this little gem. It will not be a letdown.

Definitely not a feel good movie, but rather a well crafted existential tale about a woman trying to make her way in a ruthless, cold, calculating world of criminals. Lorna starts out as a tough woman grasping at a better life through whatever means necessary. As the story unfolds, we see her lunge towards human contact in a kind of self preservation. Her character struggles to deal with the reality that her silence allowed a chain of events that she cannot accept. Every time she tries to rise up against the indomitable force of the criminal she is working for, I was cheering for her to succeed, all the while knowing that like Sysiphus, she never could.

Not the best of Dardennes films but a good story (the film deservedly won the script prize in Cannes). Dardenne-regular Jeremie Renier (who also appeared in ATONEMENT) gives a scary yet touching portrayal of a fatal dope addict.
