Hello Herman (2012)

Set in the not so distant future, in Any Town USA, sixteen-years-old Herman Howards makes a fateful decision. He enters his suburban school and kills thirty nine students, two teachers, and a police officer. Just before his arrest, he emails his idol, famous journalist Lax Morales, sending him clips of the shootings captured with Herman's own digital camera. In the clips Herman tells Lax, "I want to tell my story on your show". Lax, haunted by his own past, is now face to face with Herman.

Garrett Backstrom plays sixteen-year-old Herman Howards in Michelle Danner's Hello Herman. A teenager troubled by school bullies and a tense home life, Herman makes the unfortunate decision to bring a gun to school one day and massacre over thirty students and faculty at his high school. However, Herman makes an attempt to tell his story to the world by contacting a reporter named Lax for a popular news website. Through his interviews with Lax, Herman prompts the audience to ask itself critical questions regarding youth violence and bullying. What are the causes? How do we prevent this? What is the appropriate response? Backstrom performance shed lights on these questions and more, as Hello Herman prompts societies around the world to consider its role in such tragic occurrences and how to go about effecting the change necessary to truly address the issue.

This film dares to take a look at the problem of school shootings by looking at the problem of bullying and cyber-bullying, which are, sadly, continuously relevant aspects of everyday adolescence. This is a great movie for parents to watch with their high school kids-- even in middle school-- both to teach them about why bullying is wrong and to give them strength in overcoming their own potential bully issues in school. It also invites a dialogue about bullying in schools which is EXTREMELY important and not a common enough occurrence. Hello Herman is a movie full of different perspectives, so it doesn't dogmatically side with the victims or the shooter. To give you an idea of how bold this film is willing to be, the protagonist is a former White Power member who beats a young black boy to death. Whoah, right? Everyone is full of vices that they can't seem to overcome, which is a rare find in this cinematic age of super heroes and seemingly flawless do-gooders.

"Hello Herman" is the story of a teen (Garrett Backstrom) telling a blogger (Norman Reedus) and why he committed a horrifying crime. It is very disturbing, but equally so is the public reaction shown via a news segment called Chet Chat, which calls for an equally evil and violent response. The aggressive rhetoric is a painful reminder that society seems to cry for vengeance without stopping to consider the causes of the first destructive outburst. This highly effective and heart-wrenching film is a sobering look at tragedies and the visceral reactions people have to them, as well as how people can be brought to the breaking point to commit such atrocities.

Michelle Danner's latest film, "Hello Herman," is a powerful and pervasive film about the effects of an unthinkable atrocity on the general populace as well as the shooter himself. It tells the tale of Herman Howards (Garrett Backstrom), a sixteen year old who snaps and commits a horrifying crime. He contacts his favorite blogger, Lax Morales (Norman Reedus), and offers to tell his side of the story. Through a series of interviews cleverly shown alongside a rising call for violent retaliation by a political pundit and a senator, "Hello Herman" examines how evil acts can occur and their causes, as well as the continued desensitization to violence that permeates current American society.
