Helen of Troy (1956)

Prince Paris of Troy, shipwrecked on a mission to the king of Sparta, meets and falls for Queen Helen before he knows who she is. Rudely received by the royal Greeks, he must flee...but fate and their mutual passions lead him to take Helen along. This gives the Greeks just the excuse they need for much-desired war.

'Helen of Troy' follows the story of Helen and the outbreak of the Trojan War. This is more of a love story between Helen and Paris, who is shipwrecked and falls in love with Helen without knowing she is queen. The film portrays the couple as lovesick and wanting nothing more than to be together. (Other films and books have different portrayals of the characters, but in this one, they are simply hopelessly in love.) The film is pretty slow-moving in some places, but the battles and the detail to the scenery are done pretty well. There are also some good performances. I thought that the slave girl did a particularly good job, and she was one of the most well-liked characters. Overall, this is a good adaption if you can look beyond the slow-moving story in places and look beyond some of the cheesey romance and dialogue. In my opinion, a perfect Iliad film version has not yet been created, but this one is entertaining and does have some good bits.

it's a pretty good interpretation of the book.29 years ago I was convinced Paris and Helen were the most attractive people on the earth

Solid story of the Trojan Wars in typical soundstage telling for the 50's. Good action and melodramatic acting for the obligatory love story around the mass killings sequences.

Lovely old film, which may not actually have launched a 1000 ships, but which first introduced me to the story of The Illiad when I was VERY young and set me off on several explorations of its locations (spured on by Michael Wood's In Search of the Trojan War). It is certainly more fun than being made to read the story in Latin (that dubious pleasure came later!) Given the lack of the amazing CGI recreations of the more recent "Troy", the 1956 film still does an excellent job of re-creating the action and feel of the epic battles. If anything lets it down it is the more intimate scenes, which have a somewhat dated feel. My recomendation is first see 2004's "Troy", and if you enjoy that, go back and check out this fine "original". The recent "Helen of Troy" TV movie isn't bad either.
