Soderbergh once used Sasha Grey, an actual adult film star, to portray a high class escort in his film The Girlfriend Experience. In Haywire he's cast Gina Carano, a real life mixed martial arts superstar, to play a rouge covert agent. Although neither lead has a strong suite for acting just yet, at least in the way it's implied here, both are effectively mesmerizing in their respective roles. Keep in mind this is no "female version" of a Bourne movie. Haywire has a lot of style, a lot of spunk, gets to the point rather quickly & although it's not a funny movie in the least it never seems to take itself too seriously.

The four of us who went together to see Haywire thoroughly enjoyed it. It's an action movie with a common, simplistic plot, but it stands out from the usual fare with its different approach to filming and sound. Gina Carano is terrific. The fact that she did her own stunts lent realism to the film, unlike so many action films that are so outlandishly over the top. Admittedly, it was confusing at first, but it came together as the movie progressed. A very entertaining action film which seemed a bit more grounded in reality than most.

Haywire is a well-directed and finely paced spy thriller that has gritty fighting sequences and a potential action star with Gina Carano.

Steven Soderbergh devised the film especially for his kickboxing champion leading lady Gina Carano, who kicks her way through a line of leading men, all coming off a poor second best.
