Green Card (1990)

Urban horticulturalist Brontë Mitchell has her eye on a gorgeous apartment, but the building's board will rent it only to a married couple. Georges Fauré, a waiter from France whose visa is expiring, needs to marry an American woman to stay in the country. Their marriage of convenience turns into a burden when they must live together to allay the suspicions of the immigration service, as the polar opposites grate on each other's nerves.

Feelgood comedy/drama to which the "Andie MacDowell test" (is the script good enough to survive her) doesn't apply as she's both well-cast and awake here. Depardieu runs away with the film though, with help from Peter Weir's elegant script. A proper grown-up romantic comedy with a heartbreaking ending and a fine premise. Niggles? It has its slow moments. Some of the minor characters are thin and the set up is a little clunky, but there's a lot to enjoy here.

It should be so bad that it's actually pretty good. The stilted story, crude cinematography and overdone acting are bizarre and comical, but somehow it works.
