Teen misfits Roma, Toto, and Drop call themselves the "Don Glees," an informal name for their backyard adventures. One day, when the trio gets blamed for a nearby forest fire, they set off into the woods to prove their innocence. This movie is a typical coming-of-age story. It is full of cliches and tropes. It's about three losers that go on an adventure and think about their future. There are a lot of beautiful scenes in it. But unfortunately, it is too exaggerated in a lot of ways, and full of cringe. The worst scene was one where all main characters sing "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star" together, and they obviously exchanged the voice actors so they can sing accent-free English (in the original Japanese version).

A quintessential “last teen summer” story, the premise of Goodbye, Don Glees!, writer/director Atsuko Ishizuka’s first original feature, is a bit trite at first blush. But like the nectar of succulent flowers in full bloom, there is much to savor.

An advantage of Japanese animated cinema is that they always have to have fresh ideas to harvest. This adventure, which involves the difficult to grow up, and the separation, has a certain aroma reminiscent of the eighties classic Stand by me. In the end, it leaves a bittersweet but pleasant taste in the mouth, after all.
