You mean, "Godzilla vs. the Smog Monster", which is the title I know it as. Probably the only Godzilla movie (other then the US remake with Matthew Broderick) that I saw in a theater. Some of the scenes I thought were pretty shocking as a kid. I later saw a version on SciFi with added stuff that I guess had been cut out of the first US release.

Simply put... it's a strange movie. It mixes in "radical", trippy music, with a very dark subject and overtone, and oh yeah, Godzilla flies!

The first monster movie since 1954's Gojira to successfully use the genre as a mode for conveying a deep message. This surreal and progressive film deals with the increasing pollution problem and its affect on the planet as Godzilla fights the embodiment of sludge, grime, smoke and all other forms of pollution. Strange editing and animated interludes make this look more like an independent Sundance entry than a monster flick, which makes it stand above most. But, the final act disregards that approach and turns back into the classic Godzilla film which is fine but a strange turn considering the mood of the rest of the movie.

The second Godzilla film I ever saw, and my personal favourite of the Showa Era (1954-1975). Godzilla battles Hedorah, the Smog Monster.

Although the story had a darker theme (of current relevancy) and there was actually a great deal of death in the film... It still didn't quite get the balance right! I personally liked the monster and frankly the films message of pollution was reminiscent of the first Godzilla, but the franchise has this whole Godzilla superhero thing going on now and frankly I'm just not buying it!
