Glorious 39 (2009)

A mysterious tale set around a traditional British family on the eve of World War Two. Oblivious to the looming shadow of World War II, the wealthy Keyes maintain a confident façade in the British countryside until daughter Anne becomes an unexpected pawn. A wartime mystery and a psychological thriller fail to gel completely in the new film from Stephen Poliakoff. Theres a touch too much of the BBC Sunday afternoon drama about it to make it cinematic, and the stilted stage acting jars a little

What a shame. Starts out as a superior period drama akin to 39 steps and has elements of North by North West laden through it. The fact that it descends into confused, near farce must be laid at the director's door. Avoid this inglorious film!

Poliakoff was one of the great talents of the 1990s, but this is first film for 10 years. An old school thriller desperate to immitate 1930s Hitchcock â?? sometimes creepy, and sometimes daft. Its too long and does drag in places. Poliakoff places a game Garai in the paranoid centre of the action: a bit like Margaret Lockwood in â??The Lady Vanishesâ?? or Cary Grant in â??North by Northwestâ??, she appears in every scene bar a modern-day framing device that sadly dilutes some of the filmâ??s more opaque elements. As Anne stumbles upon some dastardly goings-on, we see everything through her eyes so that you wonder whether sheâ??s a victim or just untrustworthy. Poliakoffâ??s heightened dialogue and his actorsâ?? arch delivery are an acquired taste, but somehow they mostly suit the sense of a nightmare enveloping Anne. If only the plotting were more convincing, and the prologue and epilogue less distracting.

Pre-WWII political and social conspiracy are the subject of this historically fascinating but merely gently menacing thriller from the darling of the BBC drama unit Stephen Poliakoff, and whilst a typically dreamlike atmosphere seeps out from the screen, the exposition heavy plot is drawn out too far.

Beautifully shot in some captivating locations, Glorious 39 is still a limp and fatuous tale with a so-what ending. A shame, as the involvement of the aristocracy with Hitler's rise to power begs for a more informative and thrilling treatment but you won't find it here in this decidedly girly movie. The cast are superb but a lacklustre script gives them little to do except act posh while a severe lack of action does little to alleviate boredom. Toff tosh. 1 star for the breathtaking scenery and interiors.
