Gloomy Sunday (1999)

Budapest in the 1930s. Restaurant owner Laszlo hires pianist András to play in his restaurant. Both men fall in love with the beautiful waitress Ilona who inspires András to his only composition. His song of Gloomy Sunday is, at first, loved and then feared, for its melancholic melody sets off a chain of suicides. The fragile balance of the erotic ménage à trois is sent off kilter when the German Hans falls in love with Ilona as well.

Wikipedia says this is the Netflix founder's favorite movie so I decided to check it out! WOW - what a movie. Love, morality and tragedy. Also, begs the question does knowledge create better ways to live or sadly better ways to kill?

A bittersweet lovestory and a lovely, but death-bringing song called "Gloomy Sunday". The Nazi-background makes it even a bit more interesting. All characters in this movie are tragic. I cannot believe what happens throughout the film. Very melancholic.

I thought this was a wonderful movie - a few cheesy moments that probably weren't necessary, but overall a beautifully filmed romantic story that is well worth seeing.
