Get Shorty (1995)

Chili Palmer is a Miami mobster who gets sent to L.A. to collect a bad debt from Harry Zimm, a Hollywood producer who specializes in cheesy horror films. When Chili meets Harry's leading lady, the romantic sparks fly. After pitching his own life story as a movie idea, Chili learns that being a mobster and being a Hollywood producer really aren't all that different.

There's always a temptation for movies about the movie business to be either impenetrable or just up themselves, but this is both accessible and very, very funny. The cast turn in wonderful performances, the script is very sharp, and the affection for the movie business and for Los Angeles shines through even as both are thoroughly pilloried. Low-key, clever, and extremely amusing.

A perfect comedy: goofy AND smart. It's a great example of characters who are delightfully demented scumbags, a trait that I admire. I'm a big trash-talk afficionado, and this is one of the mouthiest movies I've seen. It always makes me laugh.

Completely underrated and amazing. The genius in Get Shorty lies in the quirky characters and the off-the-wall diaglogue. Not a Tarantino film, but it looks and sounds just like one.The direction is flawless, the score fitting, and the writing is insanely funny. The cast is easily the best part, with stellar cameos and hilarious dialogue bounced back and forth in a semi-serious, semi-absurd way. It's an easy movie to hate, but watch it more than once, and you'll "get it". Hilarious and lasting comedy.
