A powerful picture that is the first of its kind- a movie that makes you analyze your prejudices. Elia Kazan directed a winner. Gregory Peck shines as Skyler Greene, who is assigned to write a series on post-war Anti-Semitism. He is cautious at first, and figures out the best way to know what it is the be Jewish is by realistically posing as one. Anne Revere plays his supporting mother. Dorothy McGurie plays his WASP love interest who has difficulty accepting his assignment. John Garfield plays his Jewish friend from Army days who adds real insight to Peck. And Celeste Holm plays a magazine editor who leaves such an indelible impression you want her to come back. Watching this movie made me analyze my own prejudices and well as motivate me to end anti-Semitism one day at a time.

it is important to take this film in context. following WWII and the holocaust, a lot of people hated jews and were scared to be around them. as a result, there was a severe feeling of antisemitism that lasted until the 60s. this film is definetely preachy and a bit santimonious and punches you in the face with its point but it is a very important film and deals with an issue that hadnt been dealt with until that point. so yeah, take it with a grain of salt. the performances however are excellent. gregory peck, celeste holm, and the great john warfield are all teriffic. i didnt like the ending though. oh well. still one of hte better best picture winners in history

Powerful film taking on the issue of racism and anti-Semitism not long after WWII ended. This film won Best Picture and has a great message in that some of the worst kinds of prejudice are the silent kind, when people just sit back and let things happen in order to go with the flow. I also love any movie that has NYC as a back drop. Seeing some familiar spots circa 1947 was fantastic.

Such an amazing and powerful film for its time. Examines the unspoken anti-semitism throughout much of America... and the people who just remain silent about it. This film took a particular storyline a direction I saw from the beginning as realistic... but did not think they would actually play it out in such a way. I was pleasently surprised and glad this film chose to examine this issue in such a personal way. I still find it appalling that certain hotels and such were "restricted" as it would be put, for certain groups of people. But what I found even more saddening, was the simple fact that there are still plenty of prejudiced people in America to this day. I would like to think we as a country have made some progress against the evil of anti-semitism, but wonder if we still have a ways to go. A highly recommended film.
