Gate of Flesh (1964)

In the shady black markets and bombed-out hovels of post–World War II Tokyo, a tough band of prostitutes eke out a dog-eat-dog existence, maintaining tenuous friendships and a semblance of order in a world of chaos. But when a renegade ex-soldier stumbles into their midst, lusts and loyalties clash, with tragic results. With Gate of Flesh, visionary director Seijun Suzuki delivers a whirlwind of social critique and pulp drama, shot through with brilliant colors and raw emotions.

Softcore porn exploitation continually spiked by Suzuki's political vehemence and bottomless bag of visual slaps

A perverse, sordid masterpiece, with equal parts fetishistic porn and biting social commentary. It's like Sirk crossed with S&M. Basically.

Suzuki Seijun finds the funny, slightly x-rated side of postwar Osaka.

This is my first taste of the cinema of Seijun Suzuki and I'd like to see more. This one's about a group of prostitutes trying to survive post-WWII Japan. It was made in 1964 but there were some real shocking and disturbing scenes of sex and violence. Pulpy but stylishly made, it sort of reminds me of Sam Fuller if he were Japanese.

I had seen Branded To Kill, Tokyo Drifter and Youth Of The Beast and really liked the cool, jazzy, swinging feel to them. But this is a whole new thing Mr Suzuki is offering here! There is seriously sensitive and very ingenious filmmaking going on in Gate Of Flesh, as well as in Story Of A Prostitute, the kind you really learn from. I strongly suggest not to overlook this film if you're willing to get into Suzuki.
