Gainsbourg ends up questionable when it comes to actual biography, but it does a great job capturing the man's spirit, which it's hard not to believe Serge himself would find far more important.

Tricky things biopics. No one without some small amount of interest in their subject is likely to bother watching them, and the fans already know the story inside out. So in this case the thing's spiced up with the random appearances of a selection of grotesque, paper-mache headed Jiminy Crickets offering good and bad advice to our hero. After the initial shock it becomes completely acceptable as a means of explaining Serge's outwardly contradictory personality. Sadly, the film does lose some of that joyful initial energetic invention as it goes on, and too many great stories are skipped over; too many developments in his later life go unexplained. There might at least have been some concessions to the possibility, unlikely though it may be, that someone with no great knowledge of Serge's life might stumble upon this movie. All the same, a half decent biopic - the first half to be precise. And brilliantly played by all involved.

The film echoes the life of the composer, plunged into creativity and thinking outside of the box, deliberately testing the accepted. Humorous and likable. Especially enjoyed the director's ability include scenes of intimacy without any sense of crudity or unnecessary eroticism.

As the name suggests, a fictionalised biopic of Serge Gainsbourg (or Lionel, as his family preferred to know him), with surreal elements. Sylish, amusing and at times rather bizarre - a film which could only have been made in France. Features, at crucial moments, a giant puppet-Serge alter ego, observing events or even replacing the real Serge while he has a rest. I suspect that this is the sort of film which the viewer will like or hate (I rather liked it). At the very least an Oscar is due for services to the tobacco industry â?? never have more cigarettes been smoked by one man in the course of a single film....
