Director Peter Sollett wisely keeps the focus on the two very private women at the center of a storm that never should have broken.

Freeheld pourrait rebuter par ses atours de drame by-the-book, avec son message édifiant et sincère mais à potentiel important de gros sabots. Or, le film de Peter Sollett est très réussi. Si on peut regretter que le personnage de Michael Shannon soit plus intéressant que ceux de Julianne Moore ou Ellen Page, on peut aussi voir le verre à moitié plein et remarquer que les seconds rôles sont superbes (Steve Carell parvient à être un ressort comique efficace et à sa place et on y retrouve même William Sadler et Josh Charles). Non sans un humour subtil, Freeheld conte une lutte particulièrement émouvante sans prendre trop de risques mais sans perdre de sa force. Jolie réussite de Peter Sollett.
