Good intentions, a terrific cast and an important real-life story are mostly squandered by a mediocre execution of telling the tale. (Full Content Review - Sex, Violence, Profanity, etc. - for Parents available)

In spite of itself ... "Freeheld" still delivers emotionally.

There wasn't much screen time spent on making the characters relatable, since so much time was spent on how unjustly they were treated. The events depicted in this movie are important, but the hero of the movie is a straight man. This is similar to "The Help" wherein the movie makes a young white girl to be the hero, rather than the middle aged, black maids.

Freeheld is certainly timely, though, given its ponderous approach, less than invigorating.

For all its clumsiness, the story resonates—and the photos that run over the final credits are a poignant reminder of the real life, not just the political legacy, that Laurel left behind.
