Jerusalem, Israel. Professors Eliezer and Uriel Shkolnik, father and son, have dedicated their lives to the study of the Jewish scriptures. Shkolnik versus Shkolnik. Or to be more precise: the Shkolniks versus their own selves.

This film treats a rather odd and unique topic: the troubled relationship of a father and his son, which is always seen as a sacred and "perfect" relationship. But when the question of "what are you going to do with your life?" arises, there's this jealousy between them, especially if the son chooses the same profession as his father. This is not a bond made in heaven.

The story of two Professor Shkolniks: father Eliezer is a bitter Talmudic scholar whose life work can be reduced to one footnote in a major reference work, while son Uriel is a rising academic star who has outshone his father but remains loyal to the old man. It sounds dry, but there's surprisingly juicy drama (and comedy) about lifelong grudges, office politics, and the complex father/son dynamic inside the professorial premise.

"Footnote" is a cerebral yet visceral masterpiece of a film featuring an innovative script, nuanced performances, and an exceptional narrative. While presented in a strong Jewish context, the allusion to "Fiddler on the Roof" subtly informs the audience that one need not be Jewish to recognize the powerful issues treated so powerfully in this fine film. Bravo!
