Flight of the Red Balloon (2008)

The first part in a new series of films produced by Musée d'Orsay, 'Flight of the Red Balloon' tells the story of a French family as seen through the eyes of a Chinese student. The film was shot in August and September 2006 on location in Paris. This is Hou Hsiao-Hsien's first Western film. It is based on the classic French short The Red Balloon directed by Albert Lamorisse.

Beautifully shot art house film with a terrific performance from Juliette Binoche. Nice homage to The Red Balloon. Warning: Not for everyone. Not much plot and long shots may bore those who want faster pacing.

Hou delivers a meditation on the lines between the neurosis of adulthood and the innocence of childhood all around mood, facial expressions, with an overwhelmingly positive absence of irony. The film works to raise questions rather than tell answers.

I doubt many, if any, of my friends would have the patience to finish this movie. It's a film that focuses on subtle, nuanced interactions among characters . . . not on some elaborate plot. I must have a preference for films of that nature because I cherished this one.
