If not for being directed by Abel Ferrara and written by Nicholas St. John, the team behind the excellent "King of New York", I'm not sure I would have taken much note of this film. However, knowing that there were some talented people behind the camera on this film, I did take it a bit more seriously than say the similarly themed "Vice Squad". There is an excellent cast of character actors and also a pre-famous Tom Berringer and Melanie Griffith in lead roles. Jack Scalia however is woefully outclassesed by the talented cast around him. The story is a typically lurid Ferrara story, about a serial killer targeting strippers. If a film being described at "lurid" sounds like a good thing to you, you'll probably enjoy this film. If "lurid" makes a film sound cheap and tawdry, then you should probably stay away from this one. And one interesting bit of trivia, the killer is never named in the film and the actor did not receive an on-screen credit. The actor is still unknown till this day.

Abel Ferrara made King of New York, Bad Lieutenant and Body Snatchers, all good, low budget sleazy movies. But he had a lot of practice. This movie is so bad, it actually gives Melanie Griffith nothing to do after she has shown her ta-tas a few times. Literally, her character does nothing for the second half of the movie. The plot is that a martial arts guy is killing strippers. Why? We're never told. Nor is the identity a secret since we know from the first scene who he is, which makes the whole hard-boiled detective role played by Billy Dee Williams extraneous. What this movie really is about is a boxer played by Tom Berenger who killed a guy in the ring a few years earlier and is dealing with that. Don't want to spoil anything, but he goes mano a mano in the final scene with the kiler.

pretty tedious crime thriller starring Tom Berenger and Billy Dee williams about a serial killer who is a martial arts expert and is targeting strippers. There is a substantial amount of nudity as a lot of the film takes place in strip clubs. One thing of note, this film also features a very young and hot Melanie Griffith. This was directed by Abel Ferrara who has made some pretty good films (Bad Lieutenant, King of New York, Ms. 45) to name a few, but this is pretty ho-hum.

Fear City definitely sees Ferrara streamlining his "punk rock" style; nevertheless, the usual perverse weirdness the director peddles definitely peeks through.
