One can look at it and clearly see the talent of the debut artist. One can also see why Kubrick and his estate kept the movie out of the public view for almost 60 years.

"Fear and Desire" is an odd little thing, which probably would have been a film school project if Kubrick had come to cinema via a different route in a different time. Despite its obscurity (both deliberate and natural), it's still worth seeing just to watch, as opposed to only being studied in terms of what it says about the director's evolution.

Kubrick's fittingly forgotten feature debut was this cheap and cheerless child's drawing on a fridge that unconvincingly allegorises war.

Stanley Kubrick is one of my favorite directors, but I honestly don't care much for his earlier films and I don't think Kubrick did either. He wasn't a fan of this film he made and neither was I.
