On est loin des grands classiques de Kubrick avec ce film. Après une deuxième écoute je comprends plus pourquoi il l'a tenté de racheter toutes les copies. Mais c'est tout de même intéressant à voir.

One of the most ambicious debut films of the past century. Even though "Fear and Desire" isn't a great movie, it sure is a well-written, well-acted and philosophical movie about war and its effects caused on soldiers and on people in general.

An unfortunate cross between an art film and a generic 50s war flick, Fear and Desire features an unintentionally hilarious mix of terrible performances and dime-store philosophy to justify its heady themes.

I probably liked this more than a lot of people. I like the themes and the way that it's presented and you can definitely see the genius of Kubrick present despite it also being as he said, akin to a child's artwork hung on a fridge, meaning that compared to his later stuff, this film was very amateurish. But as a "student" film it's amazing, and still better than 90% of what comes out these days. Very solid film in my opinion and would recommend it to anyone who is a fan of Kubrick movies.

Feeling at times like a long Twilight Zone episode, Kubrick's first feature ambitiously tackles anti-war themes later echoed far more successfully in Paths of Glory, Dr. Strangelove, and Full Metal Jacket. Though the film suffers from pretentious dialog and inner monologues, it is nonetheless interesting as a harbinger of future thematic obsessions and visual styles.
