An uncharacteristically brilliant and restrained performance from Vincent Gallo provides the foundation for Skolimowski's grueling and breathtakingly exciting journey into isolation, captivity, existentialism and human survival. In his stripped down, dialogue free, chase-film, Skolimowski achieves more of an in-depth exploration of the human condition, modern society and the consequences of violence than a dozen recent mainstream efforts.

Vincent Gallo posing as a member of the Taliban kills three American soldiers using a rocket launcher then spends the rest of film in hiding in a country that could be Russia, but neither he nor I can be categorically sure of. But I like Vincent Gallo so who cares?

What is striking about it, of course, is the way that the filmmaker manages to garner sympathy for an essential villain.

It could almost have been made as a silent movie, which is a credit both to Gallo's performance and Skolimowski's pared-down storytelling.

Pretty great movie, but it didn't have an ending. WTF! Halfway through one of the scenes it just cuts to credits.
