Armadillo (2010)

Danish soldiers are sent to Afghanistan in 2009 for 6 months, to help stabilize the country against the Taliban. They're stationed on Armadillo military base in Helman province. Unlike other war movies, this is the real deal – no actors.

In a good year so far for the documentary's this is one of the best, brilliantly and courageously filmed. Sometimes you have to pinch yourself while watching and tell yourself this is actually real.

It's impressive. This is what war is about, and it's REAL. You see the tension, the adrenalin, the desire for action, the boredom, the killing and the havoc that it all wreaks upon the behaviour of soldiers, and the ultimate victims of it all. It's real and what is most unsettling is how little it hurts at first to watch this.

Early in this film one of the characters says "Welcome to Nam" - possibly the best verite style 'embedded" war documentary ever and cerainly the best in recent decades. Afghanistan like Vietnam is an impossible war. No army, no matter how technologically advanced can fight a war where it is impossible to indentify the enemy and separate them from those one is ostensibly trying to 'help.' As unpalatable as it seems, 'terrorism' can simply not be fought this way. Whatever the personal journey of these young solders, they are the meat in a bullshit sandwich where they can so easily be accused of 'war crimes' in simply trying to stay alive. - seen at 2011 Sydney Film festival
