Very much the movie Metallica: Some Kind of Monster should have been. It captures a band at its peak, rather than just wallowing in the desperation that sets in years later.

Let me start by saying I've seen about every "punk rock" documentary ever made, and it's difficult to pay attention anymore. There aren't too many twists you can put on the era that is now (finally/debatabley) reaping the rewards of success. However, "End of the Century" took me by surprise. I've always been a fan, but not to the Trivial Persuit level and this film taught me a lot about The Ramones. The reason no other doc can touch this is because the personalities of the (extended) Ramones family are so quirky and coo-coo, I could listen to these guys tell stories forever. The dichotomy between these dudes is mind blowing! What an experiment. Indeed, it is a dark story, but it still leaves me with a tickle in my tummy. This band changed not only my life, but the path of music as we know it. I had dreams about Joey, (whom I had the pleasure of meeting once), the night after watching it... and it has refreshed my love for them.

This is a must-see for all rock-and-roll fans. This sort of tragic history of the Ramones establishes beyond a doubt that they are the band who invented punk and brought it to England, but were then swept under the wave of its return to North America.

"End of the Century: The Story of the Ramones" is an unflinchingly honest documentary of the band, told from their individual perspectives. With the interviews as the narrative, we get a harsh and often bitter retrospective on the group that kick-started punk rock. This film, along with the Sex Pistols doc, "The Filth and the Fury", and The Clash's "Westway to the World", should be required viewing for every young punk to understand not just the genre's early history, but more importantly the hard lessons learned from the pioneers themselves.
