24 Hour Party People (2002)

Manchester, 1976. Tony Wilson is an ambitious but frustrated local TV news reporter looking for a way to make his mark. After witnessing a life-changing concert by a band known as the Sex Pistols, he persuades his station to televise one of their performances, and soon Manchester's punk groups are clamoring for him to manage them. Riding the wave of a musical revolution, Wilson and his friends create the legendary Factory Records label and The Hacienda club.

Pete Shelly told me that the most rediculous events that the movie protrayed really happened and the less selatious events likely didn't happen. This movie really capture the essence of the that period. The music is great except for the Happy Mondays. BUt the story of the Mondays with the addiction to herion and a scene that was floundering in excess and indulgence was bound to empolde. This movie is even more important with up coming release of Control: the story of Ian Curtis.

A different if surreal take on the biopic genre - and one of the best films about a certain period in British music. Tony Wilson was just a god - Steve Coogan was born to play him.
