I saw it in German (Leergut) and still enjoyed it tremendously.

Very nice story about a man, who's already quite old but doesn't want to give his sexual fantasies away yet. Well, it ain't only like that, but that's one of the main points here. If you liked the film Kolya, this one will please you too.

Learning to let go, cope and reconcile at the sunset of one's elderly life is not a groundbreaking theme in world cinema. The Canadian did it already with AWAY FROM HER, so did the Swedish, French, British, Japanese, Korean, etc. EMPTIES was distinguished for it was treated as a romantic comedy. The film was not director Jan Sverak's most original or his best film, but it was still delightful, sensual and witty during most of its 100 minutes! Father Zdenek Sverak who played horndog Josef was in great form. I reckon this is one of the best summer fares for the more matured audience... so far!

Hackneyed tale which furthers the mawkish downward spiral of the once-great Zdenek Sverak. A parade of cliches, a facile film-ending metaphor; the film is as empty as the returnable bottle of its title.
