Am really surprised this movie didn't get more favorable reviews. As a Filipina who knows her World War II history, it was fascinating to see this period of time (supposedly the 10 days MacArthur gave General Feller to investigate the Emperor's culpability in World War II) dramatized. Every single actor, you could see, was fully vested in their roles. OK, so maybe the love story was a bit contrived. I found it moving, what can I say?

I see a lot of people have given this negative reviews because it is not 'exciting' enough. Sometimes important moments in history are not terribly exciting they just happen. I thought this told a relatively unknown (unknown to the general non-historically read people that is) story about the occupation of Imperial Japan by General MacArthur (Tommy Lee Jones) immediately following the surrender. Matthew Fox does a good job as Brigadier General Bonner Fellers who's job it was to determine the Emperor's ultimate responsibility in the war. I wish we had delved more into the politics of why Japan went to war rather than the flashbacks of Gen. Feller's lost love, but it was still a good movie and I learned something new about World War II.

It's probably one of the better history dramas ever to put on film. This kind of story would have been filmed a long time ago. Ah, there's the Gregory Peck version of MacArthur in the 70's but this is more of what is not told in that movie. The performances is sometimes sketchy, but that doesn't bother with the effective storytelling and the lesson of honor and redemption after the WWII. This should be shown at History class now, because it's the kind of movie where students will learn not only the effects of WWII, but also what made Japanese surrendered after that Atomic bombing in 1945 in Nagasaki and Hiroshima, and bombing the Pearl Harbor at 1941. There's also the subplot about the romance between a Japanese woman and our main character, and that pays off too as well about how foreigners are being treated by the Japanese people, and some other ideas and beliefs about honor, freedom, justice, etc. So, this is one of the bests of 2013, it's a shame that it's only a DVD release and not a big budget release, what a miss!
