I set out to view this as condensed history lesson but was quickly mezmerized. Again, Peter O'Toole.

An absolutely brilliant film with Richard Burton and Peter O'Toole. This tells the true story of St. Thomas Becket, close friend and counselor of Henry II, and how he was elevated to the position of Archbishop of Canterbury and subsequently martyred by the king and his barons for surprisingly refusing to allow the Church to be in the king's pocket. It is a heartbreaking but compelling journey that the two main characters take as their brotherly love for one another falls into tragic ruin. Becket should be considered a study in fine acting. The dialogue never bores or drags, but crackles with wit and charm. Burton and O'Toole are at the top of their game, and John Gielgud makes a memorable appearance as King Louis of France as well. The title character's final scene is one of the most compelling I've ever seen on film. Amazing movie all around.
