Excellent. Perhaps my favorite O'Toole, even considering LoA (Larry of Arabia). You will love how how horribly he talks to his wife, mother, and young son. It is obviously an obsessive unrequited buddy love story, perhaps the best ever of this story line. A very enjoyable albeit brief performance by Gielguld. Burton is in top form, though without a chance to devour the set as he does in Iguana or Virgina Wolf. I think that's why I consider rating this as my favorite O'Toole, because O'Toole devours two queens (is wife and mum), a prince and king (his poor son, whom he eviscerates as prince, then promotes to king for the purpose of epically humiliating), and then even quite literally himself. Amazing to watch. There is the occasional production lapse (horse rides against phony backdrops). But especially forgivable considering today's super productions which lack all aspects of real drama.

A bit long and dry, but highly compelling as drama, this film relies mostly on its two lead performances--but they are excellent ones. Peter O'Toole as the boisterous, hotheaded Henry II, and Richard Burton as his conscientious aide, Thomas a Becket, both give among the best performances of their careers. The film's talkiness can be wearying, but it's well rewarding for those who make the time investment; it raises the important question: should one show allegiance first to God or to one's friends and family?

Quite possibly the most mesmerizing play adaptation to film i've seen to date. With historical performances by both Richard Burton and Peter O'Toole in a classic tale of King Henry II and his best friend Thomas Becket, a decsion that made history for both men, and the future history of the church and the Country of England.

A tremendously full and witty historical costume drama. And it manages to be so without falling into complete melodrama (although sometimes it gets close, though not in a bad way: melodrama has its place, and in the hands of great actors like Burton and O'Toole, melodramatic scenes further the plot in convenient ways.) Those who would cynically complain about its overly grandiose caricatures, theatrical sets and pompous dialogue fail to understand the aesthetic and literary point of epic costume drama. It is not a documentary. It's a dramatic biopic that manages, though bravado acting and plump dialogue, to explain in 2+ hours an astonishingly complicated story. And it manages to hit the mark. You could spend 100 hours studying the personalities and the political, religious and historical intrigue of the "Becket" controversy, and still come nowhere near as clear and generally accurate understanding as this film provides. And Burton and O'Toole, at the top of their game, is great fun to watch!
