Elephant Walk (1954)

Colonial tea planter John Wiley (Peter Finch), visiting England at the end of World War II, wins and weds lovely English rose Ruth (Dame Elizabeth Taylor) and takes her home to Elephant Walk, Ceylon, where the local elephants have a grudge against the plantation. Ruth's delight with the tropical wealth and luxury of her new home is tempered by isolation as the only white woman in the district; her husband's occasional imperious arrogance; a mutual physical attraction with plantation manager Dick Carver (Dana Andrews), and the hovering, ominous menace of the hostile elephants.

Well, it was kind of the same story as Rebecca, except in Sri Lanka and a lot of mad elephants, and not as good. Yeah.

I've just realised I only ever saw this film on a small, black & white telly. If I get to see it in full, glorious technicolor on the silver screen - I'll no doubt give it that fifth star. Elephant People and bicycle polo - two of my favourite things to include in a film (the other three are: dwarfs, geese and revolving doors, in case you're wondering).

Corny but fun film of the 50's. Except for her first scene in the bookstore, Eliabeth Taylor looks gorgeous, especially outfitted as she is. Every curve and then some shows. A bit talky at first, but gains momentum as picture goes on. Lush scenery, although some process shots look...well like process. Peter Finch is good as the head of the tea plantation and is a bit ruthless at times. Good guy Dana Andrews shows up as a good romantic interest when needed. The elephant stampede at the end is well worth the watch. An awesome movie to enjoy.

Unfortunately, the script that John Lee Mahin prepared from the Robert Standish book is lengthy and hackneyed in the build-up, and William Dieterle's direction does not provide anything more than gaudy panoramas of a tropical palace to fascinate the eye.

*I wanted to like this. *I didn't. *Yes, I am aware of film styles of the time. That's no excuse. *I tried watching this *four* times until I finally made it all the way through. Glad I did- I was rooting for the elephants the whole time.
