We had a hard time caring about any of the characters, writers fault, Dakota Fanning and Emma Thompson did a good job as did Greg Wise, the story was just lacking!

Fanning feels wafer-thin and out of her element. She's appropriately wan, but as we never know Effie's potential, her loss of identity has minimal punch.

A film that has a very moody, brooding air and a screenplay with a very understated amount of dialogue that gets to you after a while, making for awkward moments, but then they are probably meant to be, since the relationship between Rusking and his wife was very awkward. Ruskin was probably heavily into the Victorian quandary of considering sex too dirty to pursue with a "pure and innocent" wife, which he later wrote of in his "Sesame and Lilies." A great cast. Could have been a somewhat better film.

Disappointing film (not as good as the different film described on the DVD case, which addressed social issues inadequately covered by the actual film). Nicely shot but too much music and not enough plot. A missed opportunity (which may exist on the cutting room floor?).
