Do the Right Thing (1989)

Sal is the Italian owner of a pizzeria in Brooklyn. A neighborhood local, Buggin' Out, becomes upset when he sees that the pizzeria's Wall of Fame exhibits only Italian actors. Buggin' Out believes a pizzeria in a black neighborhood should showcase black actors, but Sal disagrees. The wall becomes a symbol of racism and hate to Buggin' Out and to other people in the neighborhood, and tensions rise.

This is a great movie. I saw it when it originally came out. It is a Spike Lee classic.

What Spike Lee does here, in black culture's definitive masterpiece, is crafts each race with their own definitive style, and how their attitudes don't ever connect through their generalities. There is that empty space between each race, and that is where this film views from, with a genius lens. TO ALL THOSE WHO DISLIKE THIS FILM, i ask you to bare this quote from "The Great Gatsby" (probably slightly misquoted), "It isn't about what Gatsby is, it's what was laid upon Gatsby". If you understand that about that novel, it applies furthermore in this film, in a whole other way. Certainly, for me, one of the 10 quintessential American films of all time (this being the only film of modern times [1980-present]). It also makes it into my top 100 films of all time.
