Do the Right Thing (1989)

Sal is the Italian owner of a pizzeria in Brooklyn. A neighborhood local, Buggin' Out, becomes upset when he sees that the pizzeria's Wall of Fame exhibits only Italian actors. Buggin' Out believes a pizzeria in a black neighborhood should showcase black actors, but Sal disagrees. The wall becomes a symbol of racism and hate to Buggin' Out and to other people in the neighborhood, and tensions rise.

This might have been the best movie I've ever seen. "Underrated" is probably not even a strong enough word here, so make one up and use that one instead to describe how important this movie is to see.

Do The Right Thing bounces along like the hip-hop beats that serve as its soundtrack, rolling and hopping through what makes urban life so hard for all races trying to peacefully exist. Far from pinning blame, Do The Right Thing just shows things the way they are, and by soaring straight into the issue and showing no clear improvement, we're left with a choice: do we do something, do nothing, or do we do the right thing?

I think this one of the best movies of all time. Really good acting, directing with a message

For all those who think Crash is a great movie about racism, I recommend that you check out this flick, or, as Spike Lee calls it, this joint. This movie is everything Crash isn't. It's in your face, it's loud, it's angry, and it's a lot more complicated than you'd expect. It doesn't care if you agree with it, and that's great, as it's not the middle-of-the-road melodrama that Crash was. There are no clear-cut answers, only questions. And that's the best thing about it. It treats racism as the complicated subject it is, gives some hints as to the causes, or at least, the contributions to it. Spike Lee might come off as a smug shit in a lot of interviews, but damn, his movies are never boring, and whether you love it or hate it, it'll have you talking. Also, Public Enemy soundtrack. Fight the Power, and always do the right thing.

Lee offers no reassurance, no uplift, no call for all races to join hands and spout liberal platitudes. What he does offer is a devastating portrait of black America pushed to the limit, with the outcome still to be written. There’s only one way to do the wrong thing about Do the Right Thing: that would be to ignore it.
