Hat check man Louis Blore is in love with nightclub star May Daly. May, however, is in love with a poor dancer but wants to marry for money. When Louis wins the Irish Sweepstakes, he asks May to marry him and she accepts even though she doesn't love him. Soon after, Louis has an accident and gets knocked on the head, where he dreams that he's King Louis XV pursuing the infamous Madame Du Barry.

Cute movie, entertaining, but nothing amazing. Plotline was focused mainly around Red Skelton which was a shame.

Hollywood ruined another wonderful Porter effort by cutting out most of his songs from the stage production.

I think "2 hours of Arthur Freed fluff" adequately describes this film. a pretty cookie-cutter musical comedy story that unfortunately feels forced in both the music and the comedy. you couldn't ask for a much better cast, they just unfortunately weren't given much to work with. it's a very light and overall entertaining movie that has a ton of selling points, you just don't get a whole lot of bang for your buck.

Like most of these MGM B musicals, it just serves as a vehicle for various acts. I liked some of the bits, especially Tommy Dorsey's orchestra, but it gets pretty stupid when it goes to Versailles.
