An epic powerhouse of a movie. It doesn't have a lot of action, and yet you are sitting on the edge of your seat, hanging on Meryl Streep's every word. She produces one of the best performances I have ever had the honor to witness, and creates such a complex character that we love and need to follow. She is a hard woman, once called a dragon, but we absolutely believe her, and are behind her the entire way. Philip Seymour Hoffman also puts forth an amazing performance, as does Amy Adams, and Viola Davis, who threatens to steal the scene from Meryl Streep, an endeavour not many have gotten close to. An absolutely great piece, and a great adaptation of the already fantastic play.

This film is perfect, quiet, and truly puts you in the scene. There's nothing wrong with conversations between characters - especially when almost every movie nowadays is filled with action sequences. What's wrong with dialogue that gives you so much insight into the character you are moved to tears? Meryl Streep, Amy Adams, Phillip Seymour Hoffman, Viola Davis - they all give stellar performances and give just enough to fill volumes.

A delicate work of art full of soulful contradictions.

I feel immense regret and sadness while watching this film again because of Philip's recent departure. My soul was chilled to the core. His last sermon before leaving the Meryl Streep's parish was about the invisible wind behind us that moves us in life to different destinations we have no idea where and when. The wind behind Philip has taken away his life and away from us. I grief for him when I see his brilliance on screen. And his role as Father Brendan Flynn is the most magnificent. He preached the messages of love and compassion and tolerance and the evil of gossip and slander. Those who love this man would embrace his messages.

Philip Seymour Hoffman is the man, and Meryl Streep delivers an amazing performance. Amy Adams of course plays the cute innocent virgin. This movie is gold
