The explorer craft USS Palomino is returning to Earth after a fruitless 18-month search for extra-terrestrial life when the crew comes upon a supposedly lost ship, the USS Cygnus, hovering near a black hole. The ship is controlled by Dr. Hans Reinhardt and his monstrous robot companion, but the initial wonderment and awe the Palomino crew feel for the ship and its resistance to the power of the black hole turn to horror as they uncover Reinhardt's plans.

Disney redid tron. this is a no brainer. they need to redo black hole!

I watched this again recently and was really surprised how the visuals still impress. I'd also forgotten how intimidating Maximillian is as the villianous sidekick, he's very cool and all the more unsettling for it. The flaws are there for all to see: some hammy acting; clumsy dialogue and a psychedelic acid-trip of an ending, but the production design, the creepy atmosphere throughout and the score are all top notch. And what a theme tune! The theme is definitely one of my movie favourites, I defy anyone for to be moved by it.

I really don't get all the ugly negativity directed at this film. While this may have been an attempt to cash in on some of Star Wars popularity, it is infinitely more creative and original and definitely more fun than the bloated epic ever was. People complain about the heroes being bland. That's because the move isn't about the hero, it's about the villains like all Disney movies. An excellent, fun, suspenseful and action packed flick filled with fun and creative characters.

This is one of two movies that has given me nightmares. Oddly enough, the other one (Event Horizon) was also (sort of) about a black hole. This is a good film. Some parts of it haven't aged well, but it still holds up.

Surprisingly dark for a Disney movie, only really let down by the VINCENT character, (way too cutsey-pie for the tone of the film).
