Destination Moon (1950)

A team composed of an aerospace scientist, an ex-Air Force general, and an industrialist conceives an ambitious plan to land Americans on the moon. From their base in the Mojave Desert, they construct and successfully launch a spacecraft named "Luna" that contains a cargo of four astronauts. But a critical miscalculation of needed power to escape the moon's gravitational pull may put the astronauts' lives in danger.

6.5/10. Excellent early sci-fi film, the special effects are amazing for 1950. The cast is good, it's always interesting. Good story, very well written. The cinematography is good as is the score. Fascinating to watch.

A rare 1950's sci-fi flick that features more science and less fiction / atomic monsters.

Based on a Heinlein novel, from a time when going to the moon was bizarre and impossible and for some reason would involve a lot of ropes. Piloted by captains of industry who are convinced to go by a woody woodpecker propaganda film! Nothing about this is very good, it is just a kind of historical curio.

A lot of people seem to feel that "the special effects may have been good at the time, but look dated today." Well, duh! It's just nice to see a film which deals seriously with the subject of space travel - there are so few out there, I could probably count them on the fingers of one hand. Maybe they weren't spot on with a couple of aspects, but I've never been to the moon myself, so it's hard to be certain. It's nice to see that, when an opportunity comes up for one of the crew to sacrifice himself, they all fall over themselves in wanting to be the one to die. Surely all four of them couldn't have been that self-effacing?

Amazingly accurate pre-moon landing film about a moon landing. Very well done. I also recommend the Steve Smith version "Constipation Moon"
