Some of the knife-twisting later scenes in "Don't Be Afraid of the Dark" feel almost campy, like winks at the audience or studious self-referentiality. None of this is quite enough to ruin a gripping, gruesome fable, which of course del Toro's fans and other genre buffs will rush out to see, but it does render the movie a minor muddle rather than a horror masterwork.

The fact that Troy Nixey's debut feature is one creepyass frightmare is what matters, and boy, does he put the nail in that metaphorical coffin the first time out. It's not perfect, but it's awfully close.

Okay, so I saw that a remake was coming out. By default, I have to see the original first, so I held off on going to see this new one with Katie Holmes. So the other night, I pop in this old 1973 made for TV movie--and blindly stumble into a masterpiece of terror. This is easily the scariest television production of all time. I was able to take myself back to being a child in 1973, staying up too late watching late night TV in the dark...or better yet, the film took me there. I understand that a lot of the younger viewers might not "get" this, so to speak, with the 70's TV special effects, which is a crying shame. I was so amazed by this, I had to see the remake the next day. The closest cinema still playing it, as I had waited too long, was in Asheville...so I went to Asheville to see it! As expected, it was a big'ol CGI-fest...but remake aside, the point of that is that this movie is genuinely THAT good!

The first real horror movie I saw (if you don't count Walt Disney's "Sleeping Beauty" with Malificent the Witch!) We watched this on television as kids, and I've been a fan of horror movies ever since. A woman named Sally (Kim Darby) moves into a big old spooky house with her husband. The fireplace in the basement has a metal plate on it, which she decides to open up - and little goblin creatures come out and torment her. It's freaky stuff. They are hiding at different places throughout the house. There's great optical effects as men in slimey suits are scaled down to appear dwarf-sized. The ending haunted me for years. Spooky!

I watched this today on TV; just happened to stumble across it by accident and it was actually pretty decent! The demons whispering was a fantastic intro that definitely pulls you in and makes you want to watch the rest of the movie. I always love a strong intro. It was a good horror flick; one that I'd absolutely purchase should I ever find a copy of it.
