In 1967, the police raided an underground club which lead to days of rioting in the city of Detroit which left the whole city on edge. Police were overwhelmed with multiple counts of looting and violence in the streets. National Guard was called in by Governer Romney to put an end to the riot. During a particular rough night, an aspiring singer, a Vietnam vet, and a group of young people hide out at the Algiers Motel. A random shot close to that location rings out and the police and National Guard arrive to investigate. In the end, three people end up dead at the hands of the riled up police. Kathryn Bigelow and Mark Boal create a piece of history unexplored.

Kathryn Bigelow is now 3 for 3 and this is a hard hitting film that is extremely hard to watch during the brutality scene. This film should have come out just before the rewards season instead of mid year as this film vanished in a poor box office year. The film is hard hitting and the acting is faultless, even if the ending is a little underwhelming but it is a real life story. Will Poulter is the key ingredient here and the unpredictability of his character makes for some hair raising moments. The film is well made and Bigelow is growing as a dramatic film director, a long way from Point Break. Grim story indeed and a shameful memory of events that aren't that long ago. 07/01/2017.

Detroit is another incredible movie made by first woman Oscar director Kathyrn Bigelow. It is gut wrenching. The long scene in the Algiers is unbearable. This is a must see for everyone.

taking my classes to go see this film regarding the 60's and civil rights... important film by a very talented director.
