I paid a dollar for this at Wal*Mart, worth it. So scary at the end! It could happen to you.

There is only one imperfection, and that is that the story feels like it stops abruptly and unnaturally. The movie up to that point is world-class story-telling, but I feel like they should have left out the last scene and accompanying voice-over, and kept the movie going a bit longer, bringing it to a more natural close somehow.

A one-of-a-kind masterpiece that is as bleak and bitter to behold as ever.

It ends a bit abruptly, but otherwise this is a flawless film noir, all the more impressive considering it was made by PRC. This is a good film to begin with if you're interested in getting into Edgar G. Ulmer's work.

Now, this is a masterpiece. Richly stylized (despite its zero budget) and one of the very best noirs, it's a beautiful piece of fatalism.
