Dark Horse (2012)

Abe is a man who is in his thirties and who lives with his parents. He works regretfully for his father while pursuing his hobby of collecting toys. Aware that his family doesn't think highly of him, he tries to spark a relationship with Miranda, who recently moved back home after a failed literary/academic career. Miranda agrees to marry Abe out of desperation, but things go awry.

It's a typical Solondz sad-sack tale, but this film seems to be disgusted by its own characters, which isn't true of the director's best work ("Happiness," "Welcome to the Dollhouse"). We don't need to like Abe, but it's unsettling to feel the director might actively dislike him.

Le bonheur impossible selon Todd Solondz qui lui permet de declencher une cruaute toujours bienvenue dans sa peinture sociale de l'Amerique middle class. Apres l'ambition du film plafonne au niveau de celle du personnage principal, ce qui cantonne dans la modestie, meme si parfaitement maitrisee...

Another depressing "dramedy" from Todd Solondz, the king of awkward. This was not my favourite of his but definately had it's moments.

Hard to dis one of the most original and unflinching directors in modern cinema, but Dark Horse has to be Todd Solondz first big misstep. It's not just that much of it doesn't make sense, or that it's a sloppy mess, but it's almost a parody of Solondz's films. A bad one. That said, it's still better than 90% of what's out there these days. So if you're going to see a disappointing film, see this one.
