If Todd Solondz wrote an episode of The Office, it might look something like this.

A few inscrutable moments aside (receipts for girlfriends), Dark Horse is a short story on celluloid, bound to get better with every passing year, if only for that brilliant final moment.

This film, like others from Solondz, offers a way to covertly identify one's own failings, with a laugh, in the company of others. A useful service, I think! Solondz' combined ruthlessness and tenderness toward his characters reminds me of the best in John Kennedy Toole (A Confederacy of Dunces). Wonderful casting, btw.

On the surface, it's a bit different for Solondz since it incorporates more fantasy elements. However, it's every bit as beautiful, bleak, funny, and sad as his other films.

The characters are slightly too one dimensional, but Dark Horse catches you off guard and grows stronger as it goes along. The most ambitious film of Todd's career and his best in years.
