Miriam and Antoine have recently separated. While she's willing to permit their 17-year-old daughter Josephine to decide living arrangements for herself, Miriam is desperate to keep her youngest, 11-year-old Julien, away from his father. But the magistrate rules in favour of joint custody, and suddenly the boy is thrown directly into the middle of an escalating parental conflict, where it seems inevitable that sides must be chosen.

Remember that shocking feeling when Hoffman threw a glass at wall in Kramer vs. Kramer ? Triple it and that is CUSTODY. Captivating, a suspense full of human nature hence it is so menacing. It leads you to take someone’s side, and the frightening part is, you might be so wrong.

What rescues the film from melodrama is that Legrand drew on extensive interviews with psychologists, emergency police personnel, female victims, and batterers. The bone-deep chill of real, observed experience cuts through this film and gives it a verity that at times reminded me of Frederick Wiseman’s harrowing documentary “Domestic Violence.”
