Interiors (1978)

When Eve, an interior designer, is deserted by her husband of many years, Arthur, the emotionally glacial relationships of the three grown-up daughters are laid bare. Woody Woody Woody...its films like these that remind me of your mastery (this is for Woody, so if you're not Woody, please stop reading)...I forgive you for Melinda Melinda, Curse of the Jade Scorpion, even Anything Else...but you have to promise you'll make another one like Interiors, ok? Is it a deal? Ok, then...goodnight Woody.

The critics were so wrong again. They just couldn't deal with Woody Allen making a movie that was this bleak. This is a masterpiece about depression and the effect it has on others. No laughs in this one, but I love it. Great furniture too!

Death Cab makes a song about it! It's gotta be great! And it is! A great movie about serious drama and tragedy. One of Woody Allen's best. Worth a watch.

Interiors becomes serious by intently observing complex adults as they fend and cope, blame and justify. Because it illuminates some of the ways we all act, it is serious but not depressing; when it's over, we may even find ourselves quietly cheered that Allen has seen so clearly how things can be.
