Crimson Tide (1995)

After the Cold War, a breakaway Russian republic with nuclear warheads becomes a possible worldwide threat. U.S. submarine Capt. Frank Ramsey signs on a relatively green but highly recommended Lt. Cmdr. Ron Hunter to the USS Alabama, which may be the only ship able to stop a possible Armageddon. When Ramsey insists that the Alabama must act aggressively, Hunter, fearing they will start rather than stop a disaster, leads a potential mutiny to stop him.

"I'm the captain of this fucking ship; now give me the goddamn KEY!"

Similar theme to The Hunt for Red October but explores the tension between the 'doves' and 'hawks' in US military-strategic thought more affectively. Grandiose and intelligent, great insight into the nature of modern conflict. The insular and claustrophobic nature of the sub is expertly manipulated by Bruckheimer, making a particularly apt vessel for the conflict between Denzel and Hackman...who doesn't love to hate that guy?

One of the best action movies ever made. Tony Scott is at his best in this impeccably directed thinking-man's action movie with two powerhouse performances from Hackman and Washington rounded out by some excellent performances across the board like Viggo and Gandolfini. It's not often that an action movie can be propelled without constant gunfire and explosions and this movie nails it. The writing is top-notch. If you enjoy tense and compelling stories you can't go wrong with this one.

Crimson tide offers up everything you want to see in a drama film. It includes well written dialogue, intense situations, great actors, and piece of mind. Denzel washington and Gene Hackman put on a show. Definitely a requirement for anyone who calls themselves a movie buff

Three words - FUCKING. HARD. CORE. But, what else do you expect from a Don Simpson/Jerry Bruckheimer production? The only one of their films that isn't outrageously outlandish in the scope of it's action and plot. Go 'Bama. Roll Tide.
