Cotton Comes to Harlem (1970)

Harlem's African-American population is being ripped off by the Rev. Deke O'Malley, who dishonestly claims that small donations will secure parcels of land in Africa. When New York City police officers Gravedigger Jones and Coffin Ed Johnson look into O'Malley's scam, they learn that the cash is being smuggled inside a bale of cotton. However, the police, O'Malley, and lots of others find themselves scrambling when the money goes missing.

A very different but strong angle on the typical Blaxploitation flick. I really enjoyed it. Unfortunately I haven't seen a lot of Ossie Davis' work, either directing (which he does here) or acting (besides 'Bubba Ho-Tep' from late in his career), but it makes me want to check out a lot more. Well worth your trouble to find, worth buying and rewatching, in fact.

One of the best in the wave of early 1970s "Blaksplotation" films, this features Godfrey Cambridge and the great Raymond St Jacques on the trail of a group of holdup men who rip off a "Back to Africa" rally in Harlem. There is a somewhat dodgy preacher (Calvin Lockhart) and a white holdup artist (JD Cannon, soon to be Dennis Weaver's boss on TV's McCLOUD), and a cameo appearance by the late Red Foxx (soon to be on TV's SANFORD & SON). The movie was filmed on location in Harlem and can be thought of as one of those gritty (and grainy) films that showed a decaying NYC during this period. The film is a lot of fun as the various principles wind up chasing around a bale of cotton that switches hands several times (why is this bale so important, watch the film & find out).

The characters were enjoyable, it just wasn't a very interesting movie. You knew what was gonna happen from the start and it just made you hope that they would keep you entertained. For the most part they did, cause it was a lighthearted tongue in cheek kind of film, but it got tedious toward the end. Check it out if you have to, but really your not missing much here.

"Grave Digger" Jones & "Coffin Ed" Johnson and their nickel plated .357 Magnums jump out of the Novels and return in the second (and last) adaptation of the Harlem headbusters. 70's atmosphere, twisted humor, and the lead actors make it a cult classic worth a look if you are into it...
