Nice dancing scenes, but the story was ... weird. :-) I didn't get it.

Haven't watched this in well over two decades. The totally unsatisfactory ending is still, well, unsatisfactory, but the musical segments are magnificent as is some of the acting. Bob 'Oskins especially

Inspired from the days of the famous Harlem Club, this is the opportunity from Coppola to do his take on the Prohibition era, as well as an homage to the gangster movie, especially the ones coming from Warner. Didn't quite like Richard Gere in the lead, though...

interesting if you know about, or are interested in, gangster history but as a drama it's a bit uninspired and dull. yeah all the players are here but there's no momentum or compelling story to be told. it's attempted reach is too far too - it tries to cover the gangster story and explore racial issues that are more or less peripheral to the overall story, which i think was a mistake. the result is you get superficial portraits of both.
