Paris 1913. Coco Chanel is infatuated with the rich and handsome Boy Capel, but she is also compelled by her work. Igor Stravinsky's The Rite of Spring is about to be performed. The revolutionary dissonances of Igor's work parallel Coco's radical ideas. She wants to democratize women's fashion; he wants to redefine musical taste. Coco attends the scandalous first performance of The Rite in a chic white dress. The music and ballet are criticized as too modern, too foreign. Coco is moved but Igor is inconsolable.

Cinematography, art direction, costuming and the fantastic kaleidoscopic title sequence are impressive. The casting is another matter. There is simply no chemistry between the leads, nor does either bring any sort of warmth or depth to their role. The translation of passion between two narcissistic artists is mechanical and awkward. Chanel's chic black and white estate becomes a gilded cage for Stravinsky as he struggles for success and sharply contrasts the pastoral where he is artistically inspired. Frankly, it feels like most of the budget was spent on the look, rather than story development as it doesn't really go anywhere and is rushed to resolution.

Visually, this film is striking. However, the pacing is too slow, at times frustratingly so. The last ten minutes of the film were so out of place that it almost ruined the movie for me. I do think Anna Mouglalis did a fantastic job as Chanel. I enjoyed her take on Chanel more than Audrey Tautou's in "Coco Before Chanel." I will not be surprised in the least if this film gets nominated for multiple awards for costume design and production design.

I was expecting something more interesting. Fortunately, the photography is good, so people don't get that bored. Also, I ended up having mixed feelings towards Chanel... just like the feelings I have for this movie!
