Queen Elizabeth I decides she likes this young man, Orlando, so much, that she tells him "stay just as you are". And so he does. 200 years later, he has his heart well and truly broken, and so takes to bed to sleep it off. Sleeps for about a week, straight. Then wakes up and has transformed into a woman. Lives for a further 200 + years... So yeah, this movie adaptation of Virginia Woolfe's fanciful novel is certainly ~ different. But the film itself is visually stunning, and Tilda's portrayal of Orlando is some of the finest acting I've ever seen. This was where I first fell in love with Billy Zane ~ god that man is sexy. I saw this movie twice at the Regent Cinema in Wollongong, and both times I was the only person in the theatre! Amazing!

I can't see how this movie would have worked with anyone but Tilda Swinton--she is a living work of art. A challenging film. How much of what we think of as gender is really a construct of society? Beautiful.

Orlando directed by Sally Potter is a very interesting film and I always enjoy watching it over and over! Orlando is based on the novel by Virginia Woolf. The narrative is simple to follow and the thoughts and reflection on gender and society through the ages is intriguing. Raises points on feminism both past and present. The acting is good although quite shaky in parts but it seems to suit the film. I like the music to this film too, something about it is strange and relaxing at the same time. The costumes were wonderful throughout, especially Tilda Swinton's character, Orlando! A very good art-house film! Definately recommended!

This is still my favorite movie, after all these years. I'm glad to see that Tilda Swinton is enjoying some commercial success, but I'm disappointed that Sally Potter never followed it up with anything.

If you haven't seen this artful movie, based on the novel by Virginia Woolf, then you need to catch up fast. It works on so many levels. Orlando is a young man who catches the elderly Queen Elizabeth's eyes. She promises him an estate on one condition . . . that he never grow old. Hence begins a journey divided into several historical periods and themes (i.e. sex, love . . .) and which even has Orlando changing sex during an abnormally long sleep. It is a reflection on life and sexuality from all angles, through the eyes of one bewitching character. The soundtrack is mesmerising and perfectly suits each time period and mood. The photography . . . well . . . it is perfection. This is one of the best 'arthouse' movies EVER and remains Sally Potter's finest work so far, thanks to magnificent settings, a fine central performance from Tilda Swinton and also the rather tasty Billy Zane - who at the time was so stunning that he even had a 'straight' friend of mine lusting after him!
