Coco Before Chanel (2009)

Several years after leaving the orphanage, to which her father never returned for her, Gabrielle Chanel finds herself working in a provincial bar. She's both a seamstress for the performers and a singer, earning the nickname Coco from the song she sings nightly with her sister. A liaison with Baron Balsan gives her an entree into French society and a chance to develop her gift for designing.

This guilty pleasure costume drama leaves you wanting to know more about this extraordinary woman considered one of the most influential in the 20th century. Let's hope that Fontaine can do a follow-up with "After" in the title.

It was a good movie. I enjoyed it. This was my oldest daughter's first subtitled film. She really liked it, too. 1)She liked it so much now she thinks she needs a dress form to start putting her designs from paper to fabric. 2) The whole movie was in French.

I love Coco Chanel and I love Audrey Tautou, so this combination was bound to be pure bliss, and it was. She plays the part perfectly. However, I do share the opinion of many others, the film is too focused on Coco's love life, whereas her relationships with men is the least interesting thing about her. She is not a woman who should be defined by that particular aspect of her life, as she is so much more than that. But although that was a bit of a letdown, I still enjoyed it tremendously and I love the way she was portrayed. When you cast Tautou, you don't need any more actors for she will carry the film entirely, and she didn't disappoint in this one.
