Coco Before Chanel (2009)

Several years after leaving the orphanage, to which her father never returned for her, Gabrielle Chanel finds herself working in a provincial bar. She's both a seamstress for the performers and a singer, earning the nickname Coco from the song she sings nightly with her sister. A liaison with Baron Balsan gives her an entree into French society and a chance to develop her gift for designing.

This story reveals the influences in Chanel´s design and tells how Chanel was inspired, for example her need for simplicity for women's clothing during the decorative times. She was also strongly inspired by the fishermen and the sea - blue colour and stripes. Audrey Tautou is magnificient.

The joy & sadness of being a mistress. The black & white of Chanel. A pretty well-filmed movie.

Kyle Smith, New York Post: 'A flat, airless tale of a sullen hooker who lucked out!' ...and I still liked it! :)

A fascinating tale of Chanel's pro-glory era and the road that led her to the years of prominence in the world of fashion. Enjoyable acting by Tautou, the plot could be better articulated though...
