The Lady Eve (1941)

It's no accident when wealthy Charles falls for Jean. Jean is a con artist with her sights set on Charles' fortune. Matters complicate when Jean starts falling for her mark. When Charles suspects Jean is a gold digger, he dumps her. Jean, fixated on revenge and still pining for the millionaire, devises a plan to get back in Charles' life. With love and payback on her mind, she re-introduces herself to Charles, this time as an aristocrat named Lady Eve Sidwich.

Barbara Stanwyck and Henry Fonda prove that nothing is sexier than a dame who's much more clever than the guy. She'd prove it again, of course, in Double Indemnity. Great comic timing between the two. If Fonda can't handle the physical comedy as well as Cary Grant, for example, he carries his earnest naivete very well. A lot of fun to watch.

Preston Sturges films all seem to have this timeless quality to them. A comedy from 1941 that works almost 70 years later is an amazing feat. One that works this well is more than a classic, it's legendary.

I love Preston Sturges. And I love Barbara Stanwyck. And THIS IS THE BEST SCREWBALL COMEDY in the UNIVERSE.
