The Lady Eve (1941)

It's no accident when wealthy Charles falls for Jean. Jean is a con artist with her sights set on Charles' fortune. Matters complicate when Jean starts falling for her mark. When Charles suspects Jean is a gold digger, he dumps her. Jean, fixated on revenge and still pining for the millionaire, devises a plan to get back in Charles' life. With love and payback on her mind, she re-introduces herself to Charles, this time as an aristocrat named Lady Eve Sidwich.

El gran Preston Sturges toma las riendas de esta maravillosa y magica comedia romantica en la que un padre y una hija dedicados a las estafas (Barbara Stanwyck y Charles Coburn) deciden apuntar sus intenciones al ingenuo hijo de un magnate cervecero (Henry Fonda). Stanwyck y Fonda redefinen el concepto de quimica entre actores en escenas de una carga erotica que logran empanar la pantalla, mientras que los dialogos son tan punzantes e inteligentes que tendra que ver varias veces la pelicula para poder abarcarlos todos. Toda una obra maestra.

This delightful screwball comedy stars the awkward Henry Fonda and the ever so classy Barbara Stanwyck at her best. Itâ??s probably one of the most hilarious movies Iâ??ve seen in a long time, and a pure classic. I think of this as one of Barbaraâ??s favorite films.

Barbarella's dad does a good job at avoiding the dismissive perils of playing a sap, and Stanwyck's twofer is written well enough to overcome her cruel & meretricious manoeuvrings. A tight, knowing, witty & sensual Sturges offering that simply works.

This is my favorite Stanwyck film! Whether she is trying to "clunk" him on the head with her half-eaten apple from the floor above or convincing him that she is two totally different people, Barbara can get away with almost anything. Fonda is adorable as the shy, clumsy and naively rich son. Even Blore (known for Fred/Ginger films) is perfect as a British conman.
