Citizen X (1995)

Based on the true story of a Russian serial killer who, over many years, claimed victim to over 50 people. His victims were mostly under the age of 17. In what was then a communists state, the police investigations were hampered by bureaucracy, incompetence and those in power. The story is told from the viewpoint of the detective in charge of the case.

I was reading about Andrei Chikatilo and figured I'd check out some of the films based on the case. I definitely wasn't expecting much, but it ended up being quite a pleasant surprise. Superb acting, script, and generally "chilling" atmosphere. It's a shame more based-on-a-true-story films aren't like this one. I may even actually shell out the cash to own it.

Citizen X covers the investigation of the Soviet serial killer Andrei Chikatilo, who was convicted of killing 53 women and children, and the efforts of detectives in the former Soviet Union to capture him. His 12-year killing spree was ended mainly due to the efforts of Detective Viktor Burakov(Stephen Rea) and his superior Colonel Mikhail Fetisov(Donald Sutherland) Well worth watching!!!

It's a low budget TV movie but that takes away nothing from this compelling true story of a Russian serial killer who had over 50 victims. The forensics expert/detective whose job it was to catch him initially received very little help from the Soviet State, who refused to accept that a serial killer could exist in their midst. 3rd time I've seen it and it still fascinated me.
